This month we’ve been thinking a lot about running and movement mindfulness. Our clients here at Feet First Clinic range from folks with serious pain and mobility issues to those who are trying to optimize their athletic performance. So, whether a light walk or a full marathon is your goal, we can meet you where you’re at and give the tools to progress (like stretching exercises) and free yourself from pain and discomfort.
A separate post this month talks about patiently addressing Gait Issues – and while gait issues are a common source of pain, sometimes the problem is simply a lack of stretching; a tightness in the body. The specialists at our Toronto Foot Clinic are experts at identifying the problem, so whatever it is that’s ailing you, call us up and let’s get to work!
If you are an avid athlete then you almost definitely have a stretching routine already. However, sometimes these routines can become so ingrained that they are automatic. Listening to your body and knowing which parts need to be stretched is a subtle art, so don’t just go through the motions, pay attention! Stretching is an important way to ward of injuries and general pain, certain parts of the body like the wrists, neck and feet are often neglected, which can be problematic.
Let’s take a quick look at why Stretching The Feet Is So Important:
Preventing Injury By Stretching
Think about it this way: the entire structure of the body rests on top of the feet, so if they aren’t limber and properly warmed up, your body won’t be well supported. Doing a single-leg squat while pressing down on the top of your feet (one at a time), or sitting down and crossing your feet over your knee (also one at a time) for a plantar stretch can get them fired up to give you your best walk or workout, injury free!
Releasing Tension
Anyone who’s ever put a lacrosse ball under their foot and Rolled It around understands how much tension we hold in the arches of our feet: the first time you do this, you might scream in pain! After you get used to it, however, you’ll enjoy the deep satisfaction that comes with a really good stretch on a trigger point. Additionally, your feet and plantar ligament (and your whole body by extension) will feel amazing.
Yoga/Compression Stockings
Yoga class is a great habit to get into if you’re not the best at self-motivating. It’s hard to want to stretch for more than five or ten minutes when you’re pumped up to exercise, so dedicating a weekly block or an hour to stretching and breathing might help you out big time! Some may also want to reap the Benefits of Compression Stockings in conjunction with stretching to increase circulation – many pro athletes have certainly adopted this strategy.
