Summertime in the city is always an exciting time. We’re all itching to get outside and get moving, and excited to ditch our winter boots for some trendy and comfortable summer footwear. We’re here to give you the lowdown on the best shoes to wear while enjoying some classic Toronto summer activities.
At Feet First Clinic, we swear by several high-quality brands, such as Anodyne, Birkenstock, Asics and many more. That said, we’re not just going to give you some general advice, we’re also going to let you know some of our favourite shoe brands and the latest trends they have to offer! Today we’ll discuss the best shoes for:
- The park
- The beach
- Going for a hike
- Going for a walk around downtown Toronto
The Best Shoes for Going to a Toronto Park
Toronto is full of big, vibrant parks. High Park, Christie Pitts park, and Trinity Bellwoods Park are just a few examples. You can spend time at the park relaxing, reading a good book, or spending time with friends. While it may seem like you won’t be walking much at the park, it’s important to remember that you still need a comfortable shoe.
Luckily, there are many comfortable shoe options for spending a summer day at the park. From a slight heel to comfortable sneakers, you have several choices. For women, we love Clarks peep-toe heels, which add a fashionable, yet still comfortable, flair to a low-impact day at the park.
You can also rock some orthopaedic sneakers at the park. These Casual Sneakers from Anodyne come in both black and white and are perfect for relaxing afternoons at the park. They also make shoes for men, such as the Casual Sport series, which comes in black and brown. Anodyne shoes are also anti-microbial treated, which is great for foot hygiene on those hot summer days.
Going to a Toronto Beach? Don’t Forget the Right Footwear!
When the Toronto summertime heat kicks in, a day at the beach is a great way to cool off. While you may spend a lot of your time on the beach barefoot, you should still bring a high-quality sandal with you. Your time spent barefoot should be limited since it can put you at risk of developing an Ingrown toenail, as well as Calluses, Corns and Plantar warts.
Furthermore, wearing sandals on the beach can prevent you from stepping on small objects, like small twigs or even glass. For your trip to one of Toronto’s many beaches, we recommend wearing a pair of Birkenstock sandals.
Birkenstock sandals come in many trendy colours and designs for both men and women. The footbed includes an intricate design that differs from a cheap, flat sandal. It’s designed for optimal comfort and includes the footbed liner, cork-latex base, two layers of jute fibers (providing moisture resistance and strength), and the sole for shock absorption. Birkenstock sandals are also great for a day at the park, or for a walk around Toronto.
Hiking in the GTA? Try These Shoes
There are quite a few Trails in the GTA that are perfect for hiking! Likewise, sometimes in the spring and summer, we still need to lace up a protective pair of shoes for a fun day of hiking. High-quality sneakers work well for hikes in the GTA. Additionally, you’re going to want a pair of shoes that are durable and waterproof. They need to be able to withstand a sudden step into a puddle or muddy area without ruining your hike!
Asics is one of our favourite sneaker brands. Specifically, their Trail Series features high-quality footwear for both men and women who are passionate about hiking. Some examples include the Gel-Trabuco, the Fujitrabuco, and the Gel-Sonoma. Not only are they comfortable, but they are also designed to repel water and provide protection from rocks. Best of all, they feature uppers with breathable materials to ensure your feet stay nice and cool during those hot summer days.
Another important thing to consider if you love hiking would be to include a pair of insoles. Superfeet has a design specifically for hiking and other high-impact activities. We recommend their Orange insole, and which adds an extra layer of comfort, resiliency and protection to your shoes.
The Best Shoes for Walking Around Downtown Toronto
Even if you’re just going for a short walk, a bad pair of shoes will make this leisurely activity a lot less fun. That said, most of the shoes we’ve already discussed today are also suitable for a brisk walk! In particular, Birkenstock sandals and Anodyne casual sneakers are some of the best shoes to wear during your Toronto spring walks. The Saucony Omni Walker is also a fantastic everyday walking shoe for any season.
Orthopaedic shoes also offer extra protection if you’re prone to certain foot conditions. Some people experiencing frequent flare-ups of foot pain, knee pain or hip pain need them so they can still enjoy low-impact exercise.
An important thing to keep in mind when picking out a summer shoe is breathability: our feet can sweat a lot during those Toronto summer scorchers. Excessive foot sweat and moisture buildup can lead to a variety of foot issues and create an environment ripe for fungal infection. To keep your feet cool and dry, look for shoes with breathable mesh uppers, like the engineered mesh upper ASICS uses in their shoes. Also look for midsoles and footbeds that incorporate good ventilation technology, like EVA foam, the cork footbeds used by Naot and Birkenstock, or Mephisto‘s SOFT-AIR Technology midsole.
