A chiropodist is a foot specialist. They are primary healthcare professionals that are licensed and regulated by the College of Chiropodists of Ontario. All our chiropodists specialize in chronic foot disorders that impact the feet and lower limbs. They can diagnose and treat foot deformities and diseases before they get any worse. They can also remove warts, calluses and corns, treat ingrown toenails, make custom orthotics, and perform routine foot care. In addition, chiropodists can prescribe certain medications.
For more information, visit the College of Chiropodists of Ontario website.
There are two types of regulated foot specialists in Ontario: Podiatrists and Chiropodists.
Chiropodists are primary care practitioners that are licensed with the College of Chiropodists of Ontario. They specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of foot diseases, deformities, and any other foot-related concerns. This includes:
- Prescribing and dispensing custom orthotics and foot devices
- Performing foot and nail care such as removing calluses and ingrown toenails.
- Treating dermatological foot conditions, such as fungal infections and plantar warts;
- Diagnosing, treating and managing biomechanical and musculoskeletal conditions affecting the feet and lower limbs.
Podiatrists in Ontario have a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree (DPM) and may perform bone surgery such as bunion and/or hammer toe corrective surgery. A few older podiatrists registered with the College of Chiropodists of Ontario also have a Doctor of Surgical Chiropody (DCS) degree.
As a licensed foot specialist, a chiropodist can address almost anything concerning the feet and lower limbs. They can help treat and manage chronic foot conditions like arthritis and metatarsalgia, prescribe and cast you for custom orthotics, eradicate warts, treat ingrown toenails and perform regular foot care. You can learn more about the extensive array of services provided by our chiropodists on our services page. You can also check out our conditions page to learn about the many foot conditions treated by the chiropodists at our foot clinic.
