To Keep Your Fitness Resolutions, Start with Foot Care

Resolutions vary in their ambitiousness. Some are a simple dedication to well-being or happiness, whereas others are as specific as they are challenging – a weight goal for example. Whatever the resolution, keeping it can be difficult. It requires not only dedication and patience but also a willingness to dodge certain obstacles.

One such common obstacle, when keeping a New Year’s fitness resolution, is pain caused by foot problems. Foot problems can quickly derail a fitness resolution, leaving you sitting at home nursing a sore foot, knee or hip, rather than outside, running your way toward your goals.

To keep your New Year’s fitness resolutions, you must start with foot care. We understand that any health goal starts with healthy feet. In this post, we’ll walk through (pun intended) a few ways you can care for your feet this New Year.

Finding the Proper Footwear

With improper footwear, you might experience foot pain, knee pain and even lower back pain. Your toes might be uncomfortably squished into the shoe, or your feet might be too wide. Feet come in all shapes and sizes, which is why it’s important to find a pair that’s right for you: if you have bunions, you might need a wide fitting shoe with solid arch support, whereas if you have flat feet you might need a stability shoe. These are just a couple of examples, and in order to know the right shoe for you, it’s best to get a foot assessment. At a foot assessment, a licensed chiropodist will do a biomechanical assessment and gait analysis to determine your foot type and gait pattern, which will in turn dictate the proper shoe for you.

Custom Orthotics

Wearing custom orthotics can help you improve foot mechanics and efficiency while running and walking toward your New Year’s goal. Standard, flat soles can cause tissue stress, resulting in painful conditions like plantar fasciitis, knee pain and back pain, but making the switch over to custom orthotics helps you avoid all that. Custom orthotics provide your feet with much-needed arch support, which in turn relieves your ankles, knees, hips and lower back the stress of having to lift the arch. If running or walking is a part of your workout regimen, you can alleviate pain and improve your gait with a pair of custom orthotics.

Stretching

Stretching is an important part of any workout, but too many people neglect the feet. You shouldn’t! After all, your feet are often the structure upon which the entire body moves during a workout. You can read up on a number of great foot stretches in this Medical News Today article, many of which you can do while sitting down, before you slip your new shoes on. Especially if you suffer from heel pain or plantar fasciitis, stretching your feet before a workout is a must.
